Running is the new rage.
Suddenly people are spending their early mornings at “run club” and spending their online shopping balance on all the groovy gear needed to look good at said run club!
This is great- but it’s also a bit intimidating and not totally necessary. Running culture, at the moment, promotes running as an expensive, cult-like hobby that you need to suddenly subscribe to.
The best shoes.
The best vest.
Sun glasses, nose plugs and only the best statistics on STRAVA.
Now, don’t get me wrong- I own a vest and running shoes and my STRAVA account is active. But are these things necessary? Do you need to dive ALL THE WAY in to this crazy culture to earn the right to run recreationally?
Of course not.
Running is a fantastic health tool that you should consider adding into your schedule.
Why?
It boasts cardiovascular benefits, mental health benefits, bone-density improvements and weight-loss support! It really covers it all.
With that, running often gets you outdoors, into the elements and out into the world. It is easy to do socially or solo and can be done (mostly) anywhere!
Running travels well and only requires a decent pair of shoes- it’s the ultimate health hack!
And this is exactly why is become an object of luxury, exploitation and over- consumption for the fitness industry. They have figured out how to monetize and complicate something that is SIMPLE.
Here are a few top tips to starting your running journey. These are simple steps you can take, without buying into an entire lifestyle overhaul!
⁃ Just start! Lace up a pair of decent enough trainers and get outside. Look- you’re a runner!
⁃ Trainers (shoes) don’t need to be expensive but you do need to be sensible about keeping yourself safe! A good pair of lace up sport-style sneakers will do in the beginning. And when you’re ready to get a pair of running shoes, do not get caught up on the flashy expense, you can find decent shoes for as little as £30!
⁃ Start with a simple sequence of running 2-minutes, walking 1-minute. By moving into running slowly, you allow the body to adjust and help prevent injury!
⁃ Ensure you are hydrated, well located and tell a loved one where you are heading (safety first!)
Start like that. Simple. Straight forward.
Yes there is a world you can explore after this.
Shoes, vests, specific clothes.
But none of that matters in the beginning.
Dress comfortably and get moving! Leave the expensive products to the people who think they need them. All you need to do is start!
